Planned Giving

Growing for Generations

A gift to the Foundation can be a promise, rather than an immediate donation.  These gifts are used to benefit future generations, as well as to provide current tax relief.  Planned giving is a very effective way for you to help others, all while providing a wise investment for your future.

We welcome your support if you choose to participate in our Planned Giving Program.  The process can be simple and should be done in consultation with your financial advisor and/or lawyer.

Please contact Angela Wainscott, Foundation Coordinator, at 519-364-2341 Ext. 203 to find out more about Planned Giving or including the Hanover and District Hospital Foundation in your will.

How will your gift be used?

You can choose to benefit any area of the hospital with your gift.

  • The money can be given to the General Fund to be allocated according to the greatest need at the time of gift, or the money can be designated to a specific project.
  • Most commonly, planned gifts are held as a permanent Endowment Fund. The purpose of this fund is to accumulate the principal so that the interest earned is spent only for needed capital equipment, renovations, and education that will assist in providing quality healthcare to all patients.
  • Donations can take the form of bequests, memorial gifts, life insurance policies, trusts, marketable securities, and more.

 Your Will

  • A bequest in your will is the most common way to make a planned gift.  It can be left as a specific sum or percentage of funds, or as stocks, bonds, real estate, etc.  The donor remains in control of the funds throughout his or her lifetime, while knowing how they will impact the Hospital and community after their passing.
  • Such a gift is paid before property is distributed to your heirs, and your Estate would receive a tax receipt for the value of your bequest.

 In Memoriam Gifts

  • The HDH Foundation can be designated as a recipient of memorial gifts when making funeral arrangements.  Upon the death of a loved one, many families request that donations be made to the Foundation in lieu of flowers.
  • Special memorial donation cards are available at local funeral homes.  Gifts in honour of a loved one can also be made on our website.

A Gift of Insurance

  • The Foundation can be named as the owner and beneficiary of either an existing life insurance policy, or a new policy.
  •  A tax receipt is issued for the premiums paid each year, as well as for the cash value of the policy at the time of the transfer.

 Trusts

  • You can invest money or property in a trust and receive income from it for life. The HDH Foundation receives what remains in the trust after you have passed on.  You will receive an immediate donation receipt for the value of the future remaining capital.

 A Gift of Marketable Securities

  • Stocks, bonds and mutual funds can be transferred to the HDH Foundation.
  • A tax receipt is issued for the fair market value of the securities.
  • The capital gains tax is eliminated on gifts of publicly listed securities (shared and mutual funds).

A Legacy of Planned Giving in Hanover

Make Giving a Tradition

Planned Giving allowed for the creation of our Hospital.  Mr. Jacob Knechtel donated a building, and Mr. Daniel Knechtel donated $7,500 towards equipment for the development of a hospital.  Mr. Daniel Knechtel further endowed the institution with a number of shares of capital stock in the Knechtel Furniture Company.  With these generous donations, the Hanover Memorial Hospital became a reality on August 3, 1923.  The Hospital moved to its present location in 1973.

We are indebted to our donors who have the foresight and vision to make a gift for a healthy furture.
