Medical Electives and Observerships

Medical Electives

All clinical placements at HDH must be approved by the chief of staff. All learners (medical students, residents and fellows) must complete a registration form and confidentiality agreement. Learners must also take the privacy awareness training course and request a letter of good standing from their home university. All required documents must be submitted 1 month prior to the rotation start date.

To inquire about clinical placements please contact hmadianne@wightman.ca

Observerships

Observerships provide educational opportunity for individuals to observe and gain insight into how health care is provided in hospitals and/or how various hospital departments function. An observer is not permitted to participate in the treatment of patients in any way and must be accompanied by their supervising physician(s) at all times.
To inquire about an observership please contact hr@hdhospital.ca

Discovery Week

Discovery Week is a mandatory one-week placement at the end of the first year for all undergraduate medical students at the Western University Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Students have the opportunity to shadow family physicians and learn from other health care professionals what their typical workday encompasses. It introduces all undergraduate medical students to the opportunities and challenges of living and working in a rural or regional community. In addition, they also experience a wide variety of medical specialties and practices. Numerous physicians and other health care staff and administrative personnel are involved each year to provide this opportunity for students. The week also involves socializing with the physicians and gaining a sense of the community. The long-term goal is to inspire students to practice in small and mid-sized communities in Southwestern Ontario upon completion of their medical training. Hanover & District Hospital is proud to have been a participating rural community for the last several years.
