Volunteer Services

Auxiliary VolunteersVolunteers are important resources within our health care community.  The donation of time to those in need can go a long way in helping to provide safe quality care to patients and families within our community.  Adults and students from all walks of life find personal fulfillment in helping others.

About Us

The Patient and Family experience is important to all of us.  Auxiliary volunteers play a huge role in ensuring positive patient and family satisfaction.

Before you apply to become an auxiliary volunteer, please review the following list of requirements and special notes.

  • Volunteering entails making a regular commitment;
  • Minimum commitment is one 2-3 hour shift monthly;
  • Minimum age requirement: 16 years or older;
  • Volunteers are selected and placed according to the needs of the hospital, interestes and skills, availability and suitability.  Evening and weekend opportunities are limited;
  • Due to the number of applications and limited positions, unfortunately not everyone who applies will be contacted for an interview; and
  • Volunteers enhance the patient experience; they do not replace or infringe on the work of paid staff or observe medical procedures.

Special Notes:

  • We do not offer specific volunteer roles that provide the opportunity to practice skills of personal support workers and medical office assistants;
  • Volunteering at the hospital does not lead to paid employment.  For employment opportunities, please visit the "Careers" section of the website;
  • If you are an internationally educated professional, please be aware that volunteering at HDH does not provide you with the opportunity to practice or gain experience within your specific profession; and
  • Volunteer roles do not include duties or responsibilities that are performed by a licensed or regulated profession (physician, physiotherapist, nurse, lab technician, etc.)

Once accepted as a volunteer, you will be required to complete the following:

  • Volunteers must successfully complete a Health Assessment before commencing their placements.  This includes proof of immunizations, TB testing and Flu Shot (in flu season);
  • Attend a scheduled orientation; and
  • Provide a current Criminal Record Reference Check with vulnerable sector (valid within 1 year).

Auxilliary Volunteer Opportunities;

Information Desk/Greeter:  A resource center that provides directions (walks people to their destination throughout the hospital) and assistance to patients and families; registration, parking, hand hygiene, printed material, internet access etc.  Escorts patients in wheelchairs to appointments.  Remind visitors of the importane of washing their hands.

Gift Shop:  Provide customer service and sales in our beautiful retail store, which offers a wide assortment of snacks and gifts.

Emergency Department:  Help with assorted duties; communication regarding process, wait times, satisfaction surveys, hand hygiene.  They also help to ease the anxiety of visitors and patients.  May be required to prepare and maintain patient refreshment carts within the unit.

Patient Support (Medical/Surgical Department):  Provide assistance to patients and families; meal trays, warm blankets, refreshments, visiting (provide compassionate visiting to patients and their families), satisfaction surveys and hand hygiene,  They also help to ease the anxiety of visitors and patients.  Required to prepare and maintain patient refreshment carts within the unit.

Pet Therapy:  Visit designated veterans with a dog.  Must be a registered volunteer with a therapy dog organization (i.e. Therapeutic Paws of Canada)

Restorative Care Unit Health Stay Volunteer:  Engage patients in social activities, while encouraging patients to stay as mobile as possible.

Ambulatory Care Clinic (Specialists/Obstetrics):  Help with patient flow through the clinic area to help ease the anxiety of a hospital visit and provide a warm caring atmosphere.

Day Surgery/Lab Greeter:  Provide information and general support to patients and family members receiving care or in the Surgical Services or Laboratory Departments.  Provide general support to patients having outpatient surgery including assisting when discharged.  Provide information, directions (walk people to their destination).  Escort people in wheelchairs to appointments.  Remind visitors of the importance of washing their hands.

Special Event Planning/Fundraising:  Engage in planning and coordinating of events and activities that help to raise money (draws, bake sale, bazaar, and handcrafts).  Profits are donated to the hospital for the purchase of equipment.

Volunteer Executive:  A member of the Volunteer Association Board of Directors.

Television Services: Provide television services to inpatients as required.

Please note:  Volunteer opportunities are limited outside of weekday business hours.  Please contact us for role availability on evenings and weekends.
